The Challenges of Reforming the International Monetary System in the Post COVID-19 World

Abstract The paper analyzes if the international monetary system calls for reform and whether China and the renminbi will play a decisive role in the post COVID-19 world. It also evaluates the main scenarios and trends that is being discussed since the global crisis – selecting the relevant authors, journals, institutions and opinions – examines present conditions and tries to extrapolate into future trends. Opting for a nontechnical approach, the article could be a good insight into the international monetary system, for academics, non-experts and policy makers. Testing for random walk in euro exchange rates using the subsampling approach

This study utilizes variance ratio tests based on the subsampling approach to test the behaviour of euro-based exchange rates markets. Results are mixed, although the random walk behaviour is dominant among the three major currencies namely the Japanese yen, the US dollar and the British pound.

THE US DOLLAR, THE EURO, THE JAPANESE YEN AND THE CHINESE YUAN IN THE FOREIGN EXCHANGE MARKET – A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

This paper exposes an evaluation of the bilateral exchange rate developments of the US dollar against the euro, the Japanese yen and the Chinese yuan/renminbi and surveys the nominal and real effective exchange rates trends of such currencies over the period 1994-2012. It also briefly reviews the currency composition of the foreign exchange market turnover, pointing out several important features of the evolution of this market after the introduction of the euro.
